  1. My husband and I had a 1929 farmhouse that we bought in 2001. We upgraded the windows right away and in 2006 we installed a new certified fireplace insert with a cooktop so when the power went out we were able to heat the main room and cook. But in 2007 the opportunity to buy a Built Green Certified home in our community of West Seattle presented itself and we sold our old home to someone who was more capable of bringing an older home up to the level it needed to be, to be efficient and comfortable. We had no ability or actual desire to spend our lives and a lot of money rebuilding a house that needed new wiring, new plumbing (soon) and a new roof (even sooner).

By buying a newly built home that was constructed using green methods and also up to green standards when it came to indoor air quality, healthy heating methods, and a strong sense of neighborhood in a walkable community (the development is also Built Green Certified and has won a number of awards), we were able to stair-step into a healthy home and leave the rebuilding and remodeling to someone else.
